Last week, Russian President Vladimir Putin reacted sharply to the violent incidents in Donbass, Ukraine. He called the Donbass violence a genocide after meeting with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz. Putin said Ukraine was systematically violating human rights.
Putin also supported a resolution passed by the State Duma of the Russian parliament, urging him to recognize two regions in the Donbass as self-declared people’s republics. Vladimir Putin fiercely criticized Ukraine for not implementing the Minsk Agreement or accepting the Normandy Format proposals with Germany and France.
The Donbass region has a large Russian-speaking population. In such a situation, there have been many violent demonstrations against Ukraine in this area. Ukraine has also used force many times to crush these demonstrations. Russia alleges that Ukraine is persecuting Russian-speaking people in the Donbass, due to which the people there are revolting.
