Apple is dropping plans to increase production of its new iPhone this year, as an anticipated demand increase failed to materialize.

According to news reports, the company reportedly told suppliers to ditch plans to increase assembly of its iPhone 14 product family by up to 6 million units in the second half of the year.

Instead, the report says the tech giant aims to produce 90 million handsets for this period, a similar number to the year previous, and in line with Apple’s original forecast this summer.

Demand for the higher priced iPhone 14 Pro models is stronger than for entry-level versions, and at least one Apple supplier is shifting production towards premium models.

Apple said this week it would start manufacturing the recently launched iPhone 14 in India, as the California-based company moves some production away from China.
