USA: Raphael Warnock wins Georgia runoff, growing Democrats’ Senate majority

U.S. Democratic Senator Raphael Warnock’s re-election victory in Georgia means Senate Democrats will enjoy a thin majority in chamber, a win celebrated by Majority Leader Chuck Schumer at a news conference on Wednesday.

The outcome seals Democratic control of the chamber, giving them 51 members in the 100-seat Senate. A slim majority, but one giving Democrats more leeway to craft legislation, to speed judicial and executive appointments, and full control of key committees with subpoena power.

Senator Warnock, a Baptist minister, beat back a challenge from Republican Herschel Walker, a former professional football star who had the endorsement of former President Donald Trump.
